Dr. Shu-Hui (Susan) Chang is an Associate Teaching Professor and the Director of Distance Education for the Department of Computer Science at Iowa State University. She is also a Blackboard Senior Certified Trainer.
Dr. Chang has taught in the higher education since 1995. One of the large online courses she designed and taught since 2003 which serves several hundred students every semester with 94% high student satisfaction rate. The course earned approximately $2.3 million in student tuition and more than 4,000 credit hours each semester at its peak for the department and college. She used this course as one of her research bases. Her research paper has been published in a top-tier journal: “Journal of Research on Technology in Education”. Dr. Chang has taught over 23,000 students, earned more than 91,000 credit hours, and generated substantial revenue for the department, college and university.
Dr. Chang also leads the graduate TA training and designed the COMS 500: Computer Science Graduate TA Training course, which included in-person training sessions in August 2022, 2023, and 2024. These training sessions were immensely beneficial for all faculty members and crucial to the department's success. During this time, Dr. Chang trained a total of 164 graduate TAs. Notably, in spring 2024, seven of these trained TAs received the prestigious Teaching Excellence Award from Iowa State University's Graduate College. This achievement underscores Dr. Chang’s substantial and meaningful contributions to both undergraduate and graduate education and highlights her leadership role within the department.
Dr. Chang received three prestigious international awards, including two Blackboard Greenhouse Exemplary Course Program Awards (2007, 2008), the Quality Matters Certificate Award (2024), two ISU LAS awards (College of Liberal Arts and Science Excellence in Introductory Undergraduate Teaching Award, 2008; The Master Teacher Award, 2009), one Departmental Excellence Award in Teaching (2024), and one ISU CELT High Quality Award (2024). These awards underscore Dr. Chang’s exceptional expertise in teaching and course design, while demonstrating her leadership and substantial contributions to education at the department, college, and university.
As a leader in distance education, Dr. Chang spearheads the development of distance education curriculum for the department of Computer Science and has designed and developed online courses for the ISU Computing Applications Online Certificate Program. She also serves as an evaluator in the 'ISU Vet Med Office of Curricular Assessment and Teaching Support Center'. She serves as a referee of the ‘Blackboard Greenhouse Exemplary Course Program Awards’, ‘International Association of Journals and Conferences’, ‘International Journal of Modern Engineering’, ‘IEEE Transaction on Education and Global Online Conference on Information Technology, IEEE Computing Society’. Dr. Chang’s research interests include Distance learning, Computer Technologies in Education, E-Commerce, International Distributed Software Development, Curriculum and Instructional Design, Evaluation and Assessment in both Traditional and Distance Education Classroom Settings.
