Math Education

I am interested in mathematics education with the goal of improving the student experience and outcomes.  I am passionate about helping students at secondary and post-secondary levels learn the mathematics that is relevant to their objectives as well as mathematics that is important for all students to be well-informed citizens.

I lead the Iowa Higher Education Mathematics Transitions Advisory Council, an organization dedicated to the success of every Iowa student in their mathematics journey.  Our webpage is here: https://www.grandview.edu/academics/other-programs/ihemtac

In January of 2026, I was invited to join 44 mathematicians from across the country — different institutions, different research backgrounds, different relationships to K-12 education — to wrestle with a question that is long overdue for serious attention: what is the foundational high school mathematics that every student should know and be able to do before they specialize?  My perspective is that high school mathematics can and should be "data-centric"; that students need to be more quantitative and data literacy in the age of data science and artificial intelligence.  A report of our deliberations can be downloaded from here: https://learnwithsap.org/what-postsecondary-experts-say-about-high-school-math-insights-from-the-2026-summit/?

I am collaborating with Heather Gallivan and the University of Northern Iowa to better prepare mathematics teachers in this new era.  See our position paper at the ICTM website: https://iowamath.org/Articles/13285066
