What is The Play Lab?
The Play Lab is in its early stages of development by Dr. Stewart and associates. Ultimately, the lab will operate as a teaching, learning, and practice space to further develop and contribute to Playful Pedagogy in higher education, focusing on graduate-level education.

Why Play?
Think about one of your favorite games from childhood or young adulthood; it could be a hand game, a board game, or even a video game. Now imagine if that game, or some cool iteration, could have been used meaningfully in your education! So that’s what I do. In my work, I explore opportunities to infuse creativity, innovation, art, and play into graduate education. As the Sony company PlayStation reminds us, Play has no limits!
Whether it be a Star Wars-themed unit, crafts in the classroom, to activities designed to help students learn while also recalling precious moments from some of our childhoods, such as Red Light Green Light or even Red Rover, play has numerous benefits for learning, including:
- Encourages problem-solving, flexibility, adaptability, and resilience
- Impoves mood and increases productivity
- Increases acquisition and retention of new knowledge
- Fosters connection and engagement in learning communities
- And it's a lot of fun!

What's Next for the Play Lab?

Dr. Stewart just completed the second year of a 5-year SoTL study examining playful pedagogy and its impact, effectiveness, and opportunities for Graduate Education with the initial year supported by the generous support of the Seney Family.
Dr. Stewart and associates are exploring the next steps for a grant to support further research, teaching, and development around Playful Pedagogy. Check back for updates or you may email with questions or opportunities to engage or partner.
As publications, teaching materials, and other resources become available, the Play Lab page will be updated accordingly.
