Musculoskeletal Redox & Therapeutics Laboratory (Kamal’s Lab)
Why we Explore!
The Musculoskeletal Redox & Therapeutics Laboratory (Kamal’s Lab) at Iowa State University, led by Dr. Khaled Kamal, is dedicated to advancing the understanding of chronic muscular diseases and the physiological challenges associated with aging and spaceflight. Our interdisciplinary research focuses on skeletal muscle biology, redox biology, and spaceflight medicine, with an emphasis on oxidative stress, inflammation, and mechanotransduction signaling.
We explore the role of exosomes as novel biomarkers for disease and spaceflight adaptations, employing cutting-edge techniques such as multi-omics profiling and advanced co-culture models. By addressing key challenges in conditions like Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), aging sarcopenia, and radiation-induced damage, our work bridges foundational science and translational applications to develop therapeutic solutions. Kamal’s Lab strives to foster collaboration and mentorship while contributing to innovative strategies that enhance musculoskeletal health on Earth and in space.
