Kotaro Nakamura is a professor and Chair of the Interior Design Department at ISU. He has 40 years of experience in architectural and interior design as a principal at Roesling Nakamura Terada (RNT) Architects. His research centers on the well-being of individuals and the environment to enhance their resilience. He has received multiple AIA Design Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the San Diego AIA in 2023.
His design practice and research interests emphasize promoting community engagement and development. Notable projects include the Japanese Friendship Garden Pavilion and Botanical Building at Balboa Park in San Diego, as well as the reconstruction of the School for the Deaf in Riverside. These initiatives aim to enhance the experiences of users and the surrounding community by creating spaces for activities and engagements that nurture a stronger sense of community.
He is a licensed architect in California and a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP). He earned an engineering degree from Kanto Gakuin University in Japan and a Master’s Degree in Environmental Design from SDSU.
