Jim Ranalli
Position
- Associate Professor
I work in the TESL/Applied Linguistics and Applied Linguistics & Technology programs at Iowa State. I also serve as an associate editor for the journal Language Learning & Technology.
My research focuses on the intersection of second language writing, technology, and self-regulated learning. I’m especially interested in innovative uses of digital technologies for 1) assessing and scaffolding students’ development of academic writing abilities and 2) facilitating research into learner self-regulation and engagement in writing processes.
I also teach graduate and undergraduate courses in technology for applied linguistics, computer-assisted language learning, language teaching methodology, and grammatical analysis.
I am currently on study leave in Portugal, where I am investigating informal forms of technology-assisted language learning and language use among a large and growing community of expatriates and foreign visitors.
