The Diaz Lab began operations in August 2025 within the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventive Medicine (VMPM) at Iowa State University. We aim to understand the immune responses that occur at mucosal surfaces in response to pathogen invasion, with a focus on respiratory viruses and bacteria that are prevalent in both ruminant and human populations. The lab’s goal is to develop strategies that modulate innate and adaptive immune responses to pathogens, thereby increasing disease resistance and resilience.

Our lab is looking to recruit undergraduate students to join in Spring 2027. We are particularly interested in Pre-Vet students looking to gain research experience. Candidates should be available for at least of 8 hours/week. Previous research experience is not needed.

Our lab plans to host students participating in the First Year Honors Mentor Program during Spring 2027. Students participating in this program will "have the opportunity for first-hand research experience under the guidance of an Iowa State University faculty mentor by participating in the First-Year Honors Mentor Program (HON 2900H)".
