Math Circles of Ames (Spring term)
Registration is now closed.
Mondays 5:50pm - 7:15pm in Carver Hall 0196. They start on January 29th and run until the end of March.
Winter/Spring 2023 session dates: 01/29, 02/05, 02/12, 02/19, 02/26, 03/04, (skipping 03/11 because of Spring Break), 03/18, 03/25.
Who is it for?
Any student in grades 5-8 who is interested in learning more about math or likes solving puzzles is welcome.
What is it?
It is a place for interested students to learn about exciting math topics in a positive and collaborative environment. The activities are designed and supervised by faculty and graduate students of the Math Department at Iowa State University, with the help of occasional outside speakers. We will introduce a problem or a puzzle and guide students through working in groups and formulating their reasoning. The goal is to encourage students to develop their creative thinking and problem solving skills.
What is it not?
They are not tutoring sessions to help students with concepts covered in school but rather they help students develop an interest and excitement for the subject.

How can I help?
- You can help by spreading the word about the Math Circles.
- We need one parent to coordinate snacks for the meetings.
- You can sign-up and donate snacks for one of our meetings.
- You can write a testimonial about your experience or your child's experience with the Math Circles.
The Math Circles of Ames program is completely free. It is funded by a generous donation of Mrs. B. Bierbaum and her family and by the Department of Mathematics at Iowa State University. All the graduate students are volunteers.
