Plant Genome Research Outreach Program For Native Americans

Problem

The genome of the maize inbred line Missouri 17 (Mo17) is currently being sequenced. There is a chance that the sequenced line could have been derived from a research Laboratory's stock rather than a stock currently being distributed by the National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS). To determine which stock was sequenced and which stock that is currently in NPGS to recommend for distribution to researchers, we are genotyping the stocks using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. Following the genotyping, we also will phenotype mature plants from each stock to determine whether there are genetic differences that can be detected phenotypically that may have been missed by genotyping. The project description as well as much of the data collected will become available to researchers via a project website called Plant Genome Research Outreach for Native Americans (PGRONAS) Summer 2009 (to appear at http://www.lawrencelab.org/old-sites/). Data also will also be stored in the Maize Genetics and Genomics Database (MaizeGDB; http://www.maizegdb.org).
