Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR)

What are SSRs?
An SSR (or simple sequence repeat) is a repetition of a particular tiny genetic element found randomly in genetic data. For example, CACACACACA is an SSR, as it is a repetition of CA 5 times; this is often noted as (CA)5. (MaizeGDB)

What do they do?
SSRs are a type of marker that can be used for locating particular places on the chromosomes of an individual given their distinctive and easy to find form. Thus, SSRs are often used for the creation of maps, which show the relative location of particular specific element (or loci) in a given region of the genome. (Maize GDB)

Importance
Conservation of genetic diversity in maize is important to both modern breeders and Native American tribes. The presence of Abnormal Chromosome 10 (Ab10) potentially threatens the genetic diversity of maize due to preferential segregation of all chromosome knobs and linked loci. To identify the presence of Ab10, SSR markers were developed to diagnose chromosome constitution. Thus far, no SSRs have been found that conclusively distinguish Ab10 from the normal chromosome 10 (N10). Further work to develop molecular markers is required to determine whether Ab10 reduces the genetic diversity of seed stocks.

Potentially of even greater importance is a need to relate to Indigenous peoples the importance of this genetic testing. Native Americans have long associated spiritual aspects with aspects of nature including food. Food is utilized in their ceremonies as a means of both prayer and thankfulness. It must be conveyed to the Native Americans that research such as that described here does not constitute ?meddling with nature? to produce new and better versions of their sacred corn. The objectives of the experiments described here are identification and description so that the seed supplies can be repatriated, maintained, and made available for future generations so that they, too, can experience the spiritual basis, background, and means to perform the ceremonies which have been passed down from their ancestors.
