Satellites provide a global view of the atmosphere, oceans, and land surface, but their data alone can be noisy or incomplete. By integrating these observations into sophisticated models, we can fill in gaps, reduce uncertainties, and produce more accurate and consistent representations of the environment, ultimately improving predictions of extreme weather events.
Our research focuses on satellite data assimilation — a powerful technique that combines satellite observations with computer models to better understand and predict Earth system processes. This work supports a wide range of applications, including improving forecasts of tropical cyclones. Our team develops and tests new methods to make the most of satellite data, helping to turn raw measurements into improved predictions of extreme weather.
