Ana Fiorella Castillo Espinoza
Position
- Graduate Research Assistant
Hi, my name is Ana Fiorella Castillo Espinoza. I am a PhD student in veterinary microbiology, with research focused on applying three-dimensional (3D) cell culture approaches to the study of swine respiratory diseases. My professional background includes over eight years of experience in veterinary diagnostics, with practical expertise in both serological and molecular techniques for the detection of livestock pathogens. In 2022, I began my MS studies in Ames, where I received training in 3D cell culture systems, high-throughput analysis, flow cytometry, among others. My MS research demonstrated the value of organotypic models for studying microorganisms that are difficult to isolate, as their physiological resemblance to native epithelia helps overcome key limitations of conventional in vitro systems. Building on this line of research, my current PhD work explores the applicability of these models to related pathogens and evaluates their potential integration into diagnostic workflows. In addition to my PhD studies, I remain actively involved as an external collaborator in research initiatives in Peru and continue contribute to academic activities as a lecturer.
