The Musculoskeletal Redox & Therapeutics Laboratory (Kamal’s Lab) at Iowa State University is excited to announce its first major research grant through the Iowa NASA EPSCoR Program (FY25). Dr. Khaled Kamal's project investigates sex-specific responses to spaceflight-induced physiological changes, focusing on exosomes—key players in intercellular communication. In collaboration with Dr. Joshua Selsby (ISU Animal Science Department) and Dr. Lauren Sanders (NASA Ames), the research uses a multiomics approach to explore how spaceflight affects male and female astronauts. The study aims to enhance astronaut health and performance during long-term missions and could have broad implications for treating Earth-based conditions related to oxidative stress and inflammation. This initiative aligns with NASA’s Human Research Roadmap and the Artemis Program, reinforcing our lab’s commitment to advancing space health research. We thank Iowa NASA EPSCoR for their support and look forward to sharing progress!
