Sterling M. Hubbard is a 5th year Doctoral Candidate in Counseling Psychology, born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. She graduated from Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, minoring in Women’s Studies, and earned her Master of Science in Psychological Sciences with a clinical science focus from Western Kentucky University. Her master’s thesis, titled “How does social support moderate the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and alcohol problems,” laid the foundation for her ongoing research into how stressful life events impact mental health and substance use behaviors.

Sterling's clinical and research interests focus on understanding the intersection of race, ethnicity, gender, and substance use, particularly in relation to motives, interventions, and risk and protective factors like culture and social support. Her dissertation explores how cultural belonging impacts poly-substance use behaviors among women who have experienced discrimination, using archival data from the National Epidemiological Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III).

Sterling has been deeply involved in her campus community. She is a past president of the Graduate Student Counseling Program and serves as a facilitator and mentor for the Women of Color Network, where she helps create a supportive space for undergrad and graduate students. She has also been a McNair Mentor and was awarded the 2023 McNair Graduate Mentor of the Year. In addition, Sterling leads mental health seminars and is a certified Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) Trainer, helping to raise awareness around suicide prevention and the recognition of warning signs.

Looking forward, Sterling is committed to creating community resources through mental health consultation, therapy, outreach, and increasing accessibility to mental health care and education. In her free time, she enjoys watching movies, documentaries, and anime, listening to music, painting, and spending time with her two cats, Morocco and Domino.
